![]() ![]() ![]() I've been asking myself what the difference is for a while but could never come up with some definite criteria. I wish the differentiation were that easy ^^. Considering that stuff that is shown at festivals or similar events (Jump Tour specials) are specials, I think it may really have to do with the form of release, but as I said even for episodes bundled to manga volumes sometimes they get classified as OVA and sometimes as Specials. There are actually a lot of specials that are actual episodes, and more.įirstly the ones that are standalone and more or less like movies (small selection): I don't believe any are actual episodes like OVAs can be, usually just little fun stuff. While a special are smaller in length and are coupled with the dvds or blu rays. OVAs I believe are released seperately, usually another episode, sometimes comes with a new volume of the manga or whatever. So in the end I'm not sure either, but it's definitely got nothing to do with the contents.Oh yes, forgot the OVA series. So in the end I'm not sure either, but it's definitely got nothing to do with the contents. As for Specials that stand on their own, they are often related to a manga and bundled with a manga volume or magazine, but the same sometimes goes for OVAs too. I'm not sure what Specials are, but my guess would be either stuff that is aired on TV first or something like an dependent OVA that doesn't get sold on it's own but is part of the 'bonu material' of a series. ![]() OVAs are series/episodes that are only (or at least before any kind of airing on TV or in cinemas) released as DVD/BD. ![]() If there is any defining difference it has probably to do with the production or how it is aired. There are specials and OVAs of all lengths (1 minute to 2 hours or longer). There are independent OVAs and Specials that are their own series without having a TV Series. There are specials and OVAs that continue the plot (or are prequels to the plot). They also have nothing to do with the plot.Ĭorrect me if I'm wrong. However specials are parody type of episodes that are quite short and they show a random situation. The situations have nothing to do with the plot. Like the characters going to beach having fun or telling a story about what happened at Christmas. What happens in OVA episode is totally different from the anime. OVA's are based on the characters of the series but don't follow the story line. ![]()
